Q1. What are the maintenance planning principles? How they contribute to the success of planning?

Answer:
Maintenance Planning Principles
Suitable maintenance strategies should be selected and practiced by the organisations. Selecting this strategy is not an easy proposal, as it depends on the opportunities available to the company and how it helps in overall effectiveness. Planning, when used as a strategy, in all their maintenance activities, will make the organisation effective and efficient with regard to productive maintenance time.

Advantages of having planning as an exclusive function, has been explained below under specialisation and productivity.
Specialisation and productivity
Some organisations include the responsibilities of the planning work within the gamut of maintenance department. It is advisable for bigger manufacturing units to keep a separate section of the planning work to exclusively plan and release work orders. This exclusive group can continuously analyse and conduct certain researches to find out the best possible execution.
This exclusive working of a planning group versus the maintenance department itself has planning function that can be visualised from the following:
Improvement in wrench time:
If three skilled maintenance personnel are working with an average wrench time of 33%, and if one is taken out of this group and allocated for exclusive planning work, then the other two, who are sharing the total work load has to contribute 50% each for accomplishing the task. Here total productivity of three works out to be 100 % [2x 50% +0= 100%], as compared to 3x33=99%]. While the productivity is almost 100% in both the above alternatives, the one crew person taken out of three can plan the work load for almost 20 persons. This evidently proves the importance of planning and also keeping planning as a separate entity for maintenance activities.
Specialisation and productivity improvements:
Specialisation increases productivity per person. Specialisation brings in expertise. Training and development of maintenance crew along with specialisations in particular fields have immensely helped organisations. Therefore, separate groups of mechanics, electricians, technicians, and other specialists will achieve higher wrench times, because of their inbuilt knowledge and skills. They also work as planners for their own work and achieve higher productivity, which is beneficial to the organisation. Planning is a discipline and is difficult to maintain unless it is practiced continuously as a part of the system.
Every plant having productive assets requires maintenance and planning can help maintain the maintenance efficiency. Maintenance planning starts with identifying parts and tools required for jobs, reserving them, and issuing work order based on the indent received for maintenance work. With all these preparatory work being completed by the planner, the craft persons need not waste their time in getting everything ready before implementing the plan. This planning methodology has helped to improve the productivity in maintenance.
For accomplishing this task of planning, certain principles are evolved and results are measured to ensure their planning methodology fits the maintenance activities. The work measurement through planning methodology is commonly known as „Wrench Time. The wrench time measured accordingly is an importance parameter to be reckoned and indicates the effectiveness of the maintenance activities.
Vision and mission of the department must be borne in mind while planning and hence, certain principles must be evolved. These principles must be clearly laid out, as these affect the planning processes. Everyone in the organisation should understand these planning principles.
These principles focuses on the future  work, using planners as the experts, creates documents for executing the work. Hence, planning will recognize the skill of the craft and measures the wrench time through work sampling.
Each principle identifies the alternative ways to conduct planning and then its execution. However, the ultimate success of planning depends on the real floor situation and the decisions taken on that accordingly.
Six principles that will be discussed further will greatly contribute to the overall success of planning. These principles, if followed meticulously, bring in the systems to be followed and will streamline the planning processes.
